In addition, early convention held that the bass spawn was confined by strict parameters such as exact water temperatures, precise moon phases and specific areas.Shaw Grigsby and Peter Thliveros both forged very successful fishing careers with their ability to catch "uncatchable" spawning bass, and their names have become synonymous with the bass peeping technique. While others believed bedding bass would not bite or the water was not warm enough for bass to spawn, Grigsby and Thliveros defied "logic" with huge catches of bass in springtime tournaments.Backing off the beds, not casting and just watching is the trick. Yes, intentionally targeting a fish on a bed (that you clearly see) is pretty scummy because in general you want to leave them alone for the good of the fishery.However, you can catch fish on a bed accidentally if you don’t see the bed and are just blind casting. Similarly, in a tournament setting there is no reason not to catch a fish on a bed, your competitors will.I have no problem with submitting pictures on bump boards online, but what about the ones where fish sit in live wells all day waiting for weigh in? This has been proven to increase the rate of mortality significantly but provides a universal weighing system for the tournament organizers. Overall this is a really big and open debate. Realistically the only thing that matters is your own conscious and how you feel you should act. It’s not illegal, but to me it’s unethical. Same as catching Brown trout or Brooke off their spawning beds to me.However, I think that bedding fish should not be targeted during tournaments because of the fact that these fish are usually carried around in a live all day. Even when released, it’s unlikely that they will go back to their beds. An unprotected bed is going to get picked apart by bluegill and other small fish, so I’m sure tournaments during the spawn negatively impact fish.
